Senaka Senayake Biography
Senaka Senanayake, born on March 20, 1951, in Sri Lanka, is a name that resonates with vibrancy, environmental consciousness, and a profound connection to the natural world through art. From a very young age, Senanayake displayed an extraordinary artistic talent that quickly set him apart as a child prodigy. His journey into the world of art began under auspicious circumstances, marked by a solo exhibition at the tender age of seven, making him the youngest person ever to hold such an event in Sri Lanka. This early exhibition, supported by prolific artists and critics of the time, was described as a revelation, showcasing compositions influenced by nature and religion, with a strong sense of imagination and a deep understanding of artistic composition.
Senanayake's early years were characterized by a prolific output of art, with more than 25 exhibitions across the globe, including in the USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Russia, India, and France. Despite his early success, he remained self-taught until the age of sixteen, when he began formal art studies as part of his GCE Ordinary Level examinations. His talent and experience earned him a full scholarship to study Fine Arts at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he explored modern styles such as Cubism and abstract painting. His time in the United States, marked by student unrest and personal experiences of being an outsider, deeply influenced his artistic vision, introducing existentialist elements into his work.
Upon graduating from Yale in 1972, Senanayake returned to Sri Lanka, continuing to paint and work with motifs of traditional Buddhist art and the Sri Lankan flora and fauna. His paintings from this period, such as "Untitled (Tea Pickers)" auctioned at Sotheby’s London, display his preference for brilliantly colored scenes of rich, overlapping jungle fauna and vegetation, a testament to his fundamental belief that art should spring from the need to express feelings.
In the 1980s, Senanayake's work took a significant turn towards environmental advocacy, particularly focusing on the preservation of rainforests. This thematic shift was inspired by his exposure to the plight of Sri Lankan rainforests, which had been severely impacted by deforestation. He used his art to highlight the beauty of rainforests and bring about awareness, making his project international. His exhibitions in the early 2000s, including a solo exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery in London focusing on endangered flora and fauna, continued to draw attention to environmental issues.
Senanayake's work is characterized by its brilliantly colored scenes of lush, overlapping jungle fauna and vegetation, earning him a reputation as one of Sri Lanka's most appreciated artists. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions around the world, including in London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, and Berlin. His influence extends beyond the art world, with his works hanging in prestigious locations such as the White House, the UN building in New York, museums, private collections, and corporate headquarters of multinationals around the world.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Senanayake's legacy is that of a cultural ambassador for Sri Lanka, a champion for environmental conservation, and a visionary artist whose work transcends cultural and geographical boundaries. His paintings not only capture the spectacular beauty of the natural world but also serve as a poignant reminder of the fragility of our environment and the urgent need for conservation. Through his art, Senanayake continues to inspire, educate, and provoke thought, making him one of the most significant and influential artists of his generation.
